Head Chef

Woke Foods is currently seeking a head chef with a specialized knowledge of Dominican and other Afro-Caribbean cuisine and flavors. Woke Foods is a plant-based catering company focused on innovating Dominican plant-based foods. We offer catering services, cooking classes, and workshops. The head chef would primarily be in charge of catering. We cook out of a commercial kitchen space in East Harlem and have an office in the South Bronx. Although currently we are seeking a chef with a strong foundation in Dominican food in particular, there is the possibility of growth. As a company, we will expand our menu and cooking classes based on the passion and cuisines that the members of our team bring to the table. You would have to be interested in transforming traditional meat dishes to plant-based. You don’t have to be a plant-based or vegan chef but you’d have to be excited to learn from and with our current chef about how to make these dishes if you don’t have plant-based cooking experience.

We are looking for someone with strong kitchen experience (specific skills: organizing the kitchen to work efficiently and with speed, reduce food waste, problem solve and troubleshoot issues that arise, knows how to prep food for catering displays, aware of food regulations), whether in a restaurant or a catering company. The person for this job would need to have a flexible schedule (not a job for someone that has a full-time job), punctual, energetic, organized, and aligned with the values of Woke Foods.

In addition to cooking and menu creation for catering, the head chef would train and schedule kitchen/prep staff, take inventory, order food product and kitchen supplies, manage food and labor cost. Must have a current food handler’s license and a driver license is preferred but not required (we have an SUV for Woke Foods related tasks).

We are a small two year old company and although we've grown fairly quickly with great response, we are still in a start up stage. Currently we can only offer an average of 40 hours a month, with an increase during busier periods. Pay rate DOE. You’d have the opportunity to be a provisional member of the cooperative for a year and after the opportunity to transition into being a worker-owner based on commitment and fit.
